Mike Williamson re-introduced Filip Marschall, Ethan Pye, Kenton Richardson and Marcus Dinanga to the starting 11 at Boundary Park, leading to an opening 45 with little to separate the two sides. Dinanga headed Aaron Martin’s cross over the bar in the opening three minutes, before Joe Nuttall sent a header of his own wide of Marschall’s near post at the other end. Chances were a rare commodity for much of the opening half with the two sides locked in a midfield battle, though Dan Ward saw one effort blocked and another held by Oldham stopper Magnus Norman before the break.
The hosts were limited to chances from outside of the penalty area, and Ben Tollitt’s strike over the bar after cutting in from the right was as close as it came for The Latics before the opener. Oldham took the lead five minutes after the restart through John Rooney, who lingered at the back post to prod home after Mark Kitching’s cross was headed back across goal. The hosts added a second 14 minutes later, pressing high up the pitch to steal the ball back before Nathan Sheron laid off for Reid to slot into an unguarded net at the back post. The game seemed to be drifting away from Gateshead with time ticking away, with Conteh and Adam Campbell both seeing efforts from distance saved by Norman as they chased a two-goal deficit. Conteh’s next effort was the spark his side needed though, with the midfielder driving through the middle after Robbie Tinkler took the ball past two men to send a low strike into the far corner and give The Heed hope.
